On this page, you will find a summary of the administrative procedures that will allow you to travel to Canada. Please, note that this information is taken from official websites. Therefore, it may change at any time, without any notice. Canada’s laws and regulations, as well as the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website have always priority over what is written below.

In order to visit Canada, anyone, no matter the country of origin or citizenship, may have to obtain beforehand a document that allows them to enter Canada. Hereby, you will find a checklist to prepare your stay with us.

Step 1: Passport

Be sure your passport is valid. The expiry date should be at least three months longer than the length of your stay in Canada.


Step 2 : RIDEF 2020 registration

To complete your immigration process as a visitor, you may need a proof of registration at the « Freinet Educators International Meeting ». Therefore, we suggest you to register as soon as possible. Your proof of registration may also be required when you visit Canada Customs.


Step 3 : Immigration process

Most people need one of the following documents to enter Canada, either a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).

How to apply ?

1)      Electronic travel authorization (eTA)

If you need an electronic travel authorization, the application process is simple, fast (usually a few hours) and is only done online.

A $7 CAN fee is required to obtain the eTA (rate valid on May 1, 2019). The eTA is electronically linked to your passport. Please check the following page to submit your request and get more information :


2)      VISA application

If you need a visitor visa, you first have to check your eligibility by making sure you meet all the criteria listed on the next page :


The visa is directly put in the passport. A fee of $ 100 CAN is required to obtain the visa (rate in effect on May 1, 2019). You may also have to provide your biometric data. A fee of $ 85 CAN will then be added to your application fee. Check if you need to provide your biometric data by clicking here. To submit a paper application, you must  prepare your application and submit it in person (or sometimes by mail) to a Visa Application Center (VAC). Check the list of VACs and their services: Reception Center for Visa Applications.

Be careful: to complete a visa application may take several months. Check the processing times according to your country of residence.

Step 4 : Flight

Once you have the required immigration document (Visa or eTA), you can finally book your flight to attend RIDEF 2020. 

Be careful : Wait for your immigration document before buying your plane ticket.

Step 5 :  Canadian customs

When flying to Canada, make sure you have with you, on the plane, all the documents explaining the reason why you are travelling to Canada (valid passport, electronic travel authorization or visa, proof of RIDEF registration, address of your accommodation in Quebec and any other document that may be required by Canadian immigration to enter Canada based on these specific requirements: Visitor requirements
